Happy New Year 2009!

"Jessie" gave birth to six gorgeous Australian Shepherd puppies on January 5, 2009, from a frozen semen surgical insemination timed and performed by Dr. Sharon Vanderlip.

These long-awaited babies will be loved and cherished by Rizzo family members and friends. Their sire, "Bear", was the Rizzo family's heart dog and just before he passed away at an old age, the Rizzos had his semen collected and stored. The Rizzos kept "Bear's" semen stored for years, waiting for the right Aussie female and the right moment, so they could use the one precious dose of semen to produce their dream puppies. They had only one chance, so they asked to Dr. Vanderlip to do it all for them.

Now they have six beautiful puppies to help them celebrate the New Year! Congratulations to the Rizzo family!

Seven Parson Russell Terrier puppies were born at Blossom Valley Ranch on November 18, 2008. Congratulations to Annette Gilliam, owner/breeder, on yet another successful frozen semen litter! The dam is Champion Rocky Point Out of the Blue and the sire is Champion Blossom Valley George Patton. Once again, the semen freezing, breeding timing, and artificial insemination were performed by Dr. Sharon Vanderlip.

Just "Pinsch" Me.......

By Janet Oatney

When German Pinscher Ch Dabney's Pink Gardenia "Lucy" was looking for a mate, only one beau would do, Austrian import Ch Yambo VomAwarenring "Yambo". After a failed attempt with a different facility (not Dr. Vanderlip’s!) and a lost FedEx shipment, plans were made to drive Lucy from Portland, Oregon to San Diego so that Dr. Vanderlip could time and perform an artificial insemination (AI) for Lucy and Yambo.

Over a long Labor Day weekend, with California wildfires raging, Dr Vanderlip orchestrated the AI, somehow managing three novices: Lucy, Yambo, and my husband, who filled in for me as I was needed at work. The duel doctor team of Sharon and Jack Vanderlip went "above & beyond" the call of duty, keeping me up to speed via phone and email, and making sure all elements of the breeding were successful, including some convoluted paperwork.

On October 29, 2008 Lucy gave birth to 3 beautiful German Pinscher pups, 2 girls and the sought after male. This litter is the 4th generation of CHIC eligible GPs. I can’t thank Drs. Vanderlip enough for the successful litter, for "pinch hitting" for me, and for taking the lead on paperwork and ownership details that were challenging to say the least. I certainly will be consulting Dr. Vanderlip for the 5th generation CHIC litter!

Van Grunsven Basset Hounds

Basset Hound Litter Born in Holland! From fresh-cooled semen shipped from California!

Champion Red Ruby von Grunsven (winner of Dutch, German, and Luxemburg championship titles) is proudly owned by Basset Hound judge/veterinarian, Dr. Rudy Smits. When Dr. Smits visited the United States to judge Basset Hounds, he was so impressed with Champion Splash’s The Professor, owned by Jo Ann Nolan, that Dr. Smits decided “The Professor” was the perfect match for Red Ruby.

Dr. Vanderlip prepared semen from The Professor in ICSB’s special long term survival fresh cooled extender (not frozen!) and shipped it to Holland. Dr. Smits performed the artificial insemination and on October 14, 2008, Champion Red Ruby von Grunsven gave birth to 5 wonderful Basset Hound puppies! Now that’s very cool!

Labrador Happy Tails!

"Dr. Sharon Vanderlip,

You are absolutely wonderful! Without your assistance we would never have timed this breeding correctly. When it seemed as if we had missed our girl completely you were aware that there was still time…and with your advice we did succeed with this breeding we were attempting and we soon saw that puppies were on the way!

Your reproductive assistance made all the difference in the world!

My girl laid a new set of problems on us when she was in need of your expert services to deliver our new bundles of joy.

We are ever so grateful to you, to Dr. Jack Vanderlip and to your lovely daughter Jacquelynn for your willingness to capably assist us through not only the reproductive process--but for also being there when our girl needed you the most to deliver her babies into the world.

Thank you so much for being our veterinarian! You’re the best!"

Glen of Imaal Terrier Treasures!

When Champion Rainbow Springs Gota Lota Moxie needed assistance with a very long-distance breeding, Dr. Vanderlip was contacted and asked to make it all happen. Only the best was good enough for Moxie, so her owner, Margaret Carty, selected English import Champion Pajantick Sky Masterson at Malsville. This strikingly handsome dog,  known as Brando to his friends, is proudly owned by Lora Van Laningham of Fourth Hunt kennels.

Dr. Vanderlip collected, processed, and shipped Brando’s semen for artificial insemination with very exciting results:  A litter of five gorgeous Glen of Imaal Terrier treasures!

Malinois Marvels!

Pharrar is a gorgeous Malinois imported from Belgium and French Ring trained level II. But for now she is taking a break from competition to care for her beautiful litter of 8 Malinois puppies: 7 males and 1 female, born April 12, 2008. The sire is renowned Belgian import, Yelo du Boscaille, a confident, brave retired police dog, trained as a duel dog. Producing this wonderful, long-awaited litter took time, work, and creativity! Yelo is a senior canine, and like so many older dogs, his fertility is reduced. But Dr. Vanderlip used specialized techniques and extenders (proprietary formulas) to collect, concentrate, and “energize” Yelo’s semen. Dr. Vanderlip then performed the artificial insemination after precisely timing Pharrar’s estrous cycle. The result is 8 exquisite Malinois puppies destined for success in the line of duty and competition. Congratulations proud owner/breeder Debbie Skinner of Les Ombres Valeureux kennels!

April Fool’s Frozen Jewels!

Champion Libwyre Bells and Whistles (Bella to her friends) was a challenging reproductive case! She put us through our paces monitoring her silent and split estrous cycles, but we caught her at the perfect time! Dr. Vanderlip performed Bella's artificial insemination (non-surgical) using only one dose of ICSB frozen semen from Champion Purston Foxxfyre Artistocrat. Dr. Vanderlip ultrasounded Bella one month later and Bella's secret was revealed—she was very pregnant indeed! Dr. Vanderlip performed Bella's C-section just before midnight on April 1, 2008! Bella and her babies are loved and proudly owned by Bob and Belle Nunley.

Mimi has six new babies!

Anyone who raises English Bulldogs knows that it’s not always easy to get a pregnancy and a healthy litter of these precious cuties! Mimi was bred twice in the past but didn’t get pregnant. Her owners had given up hope of  Mimi ever having puppies until their veterinarian referred them to Dr. Vanderlip. Mimi traveled the distance to see Dr. Vanderlip for consultation, help, ovulation timing, and artificial insemination (which Dr. Vanderlip performed non-surgically). The happy results were six healthy, live puppies! Congratulations to the Phillips and “Mimi”!

Cocker Spaniel Celebration!

Phoebe is Champion Loma Point 18 K Moon Goddess and a proud mother of a beautiful litter of Cocker Spaniel future champions. Phoebe and Champion Mistiwind’s Something Special, came to see Dr. Vanderlip for reproductive evaluations, estrous timing, and inseminations.
Congratulations proud owner/breeder Judy Bjelland of Loma Point Cocker Spaniels.

Perfect Parsons puppies!

Before Champion Blossom Valley Calypso Joe “Joey” was exported to Japan, he made a stop at Dr. Vanderlip’s International Canine Semen Bank (ICSB-San Diego). Good thing, too! Because later on Champion Ultra Quest Sky’s the Limit “Shelby” needed to find the perfect match! Shelby was artificially inseminated (AI) by Dr. Vanderlip, using Joey’s frozen semen and a non-surgical AI technique. These four wonderful Parsons Russell Terrier puppies were produced from that breeding! Joey recently sired another litter with semen frozen by Dr. Vanderlip. And here's an update on Joey....as of 2009, Joey is the top-winning, number one, Parsons Russell Terrier in Japan!

Blossom Valley Evita gave birth to this lovely trio, sired by “Joey”, by artificial insemination (non-surgical) performed by Dr. Sharon Vanderlip, using only one dose of Joey's frozen semen. New Year's Eve Ice Follies Collies

Dr. Vanderlip has produced numerous Collie litters from frozen semen, but this New Year’s Eve litter is very special. This litter of five pups, which includes “Nigel”, is the fourth generation of Collies Dr. Vanderlip has produced from frozen semen. That’s right! The puppies, and the puppies’ father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all produced from frozen semen!

To our knowledge, the record, for all breeds, is held by Dr. Vanderlip for producing five direct generations from frozen semen breedings. These were achieved in her own Collies. Some of the semen had been stored more than 14 years. Visit www.rainshadecollies.com to see photos of some of these Collies!

Kangal Dog: Turkish Treasure

The Kangal Dog is the national dog of Turkey, where they have served as gentle, devoted guardians of flock and family for centuries. This historic breed can be found in large numbers in Turkey, but in the U.S., UKC-registered Kangal Dogs are quite rare. So when the owners of Turkmen Chicek’s Zerrin asked Dr. Vanderlip for assistance, she was happy to help. Dr. Vanderlip timed Zerrin’s breeding and coordinated shipping semen from across the continent and performed the artificial insemination. Two months later, Zerrin’s owners, Michael and Katherine Lambert, were delighted when Zerrin gave birth to a litter of seven healthy Kangal puppies, sired by Sivas Regal’s Vasi. Fortunately, the Lamberts have plenty of space! Kangals can grow to 140 lbs! At one year of age, and now well over 100 pounds, these “puppies” are now doing their jobs guarding flocks, working as therapy dogs, and being exquisite ambassadors of their rare breed.
